Jose Mourinho no longer has control
One of the reasons Jose Mourinho was billed as the best manager in
the world was the curious, almost cult-like hold he could have over his
players. If he still has this influence, however, he is using it badly,
given how poorly Chelsea's season is going so far.
They have only three wins in 10 games and are nearer to the bottom of
the table than the top half, never mind the actual top. But perhaps
more than that, something seems to have changed in how his team is
playing. Not only did they lose at West Ham on Saturday, but all
semblance of control seemed to have departed, with Nemanja Matic,
assistant Silvino Louro and Mourinho himself dismissed for various,
completely avoidable reasons.
Reports indicate that the main obstacle to his dismissal by Chelsea
at the moment is the huge payoff that he would demand. Given the way
their season has spiraled out of control, that's not exactly a surprise.
His sacking was considered unthinkable in the summer; now, it might
happen before Christmas.
