One of the reasons Jose Mourinho was billed as the best manager in the world was the curious, almost cult-like hold he could have over his players. If he still has this influence, however, he is using it badly, given how poorly Chelsea's season is going so far.
They have only three wins in 10 games and are nearer to the bottom of the table than the top half, never mind the actual top. But perhaps more than that, something seems to have changed in how his team is playing. Not only did they lose at West Ham on Saturday, but all semblance of control seemed to have departed, with Nemanja Matic, assistant Silvino Louro and Mourinho himself dismissed for various, completely avoidable reasons.
